Thomas Hauck

Favourite Post-Meet Treat:  The results of a meet are reward enough!
Swimming Idols:  Kyle Chalmers, Cate Campbell, Cam McEvoy

Thomas Hauck came into the 2017 Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Championships with goals in mind for each of his races, but his fast times and winning results are simply driven by the desire to just swim as well as he could in every race.

“I have some specific goals for each race but just to keep swimming really well is the idea,” he said.

“I have a lot of different strokes in my program. Freestyle is probably my best stroke at the moment but overall I am doing a lot of different races, diversifying a bit.”

It would be fair to say that Hauck not only has diversity but a huge amount of talent. After five days of competition, the 14-year-old has six gold and two silver medals from individual events.

Despite his obvious success, Hauck is just taking each meet one at a time, with an aim to eventually make the national team.

“I am a big fan of anyone who can make the Australian team,” he said.

“It’s a tough team to make at the moment especially with the qualifying times so anyone who can make that team is amazing.”

Despite his calm and controlled approach to his swimming, Hauck is also not afraid to set himself a lofty target.

“A major one for me is Ian Thorpe’s 200m free record,” he said. “I am going to try to get that by the end of the year.”

Thorpe’s time – 1:50.07 – has stood as the nation’s best since he set it back in 1997 at the Australian Championships. No one has come near it since, with Elijah Winnington coming closest in 2015 with 1:53.46.

“Ian Thorpe was obviously awesome so the time is really, really fast, but that’s my goal.”

The boys 14 years 200m freestyle will take place on Friday 21 April and Hauck’s last chance for another individual medal.
