Melbourne businessman Barclay Nettlefold has been elected as the new President of Swimming Australia Ltd following today’s Annual General Meeting held in Sydney.

Nettlefold will take over from David Urquhart who has held the position for the last four years and has been a member of the Swimming Australia board for more than a decade.

A director on the SAL board for the last 15 months, Nettlefold has been elected for a two-year term with Olympian Nicole Livingstone, Gary Barclay and Graeme Johnson also elected onto the board of Swimming Australia.

In one of his first roles as President, Nettlefold thanked the stakeholders for their support and said the three new directors provide great portfolio skills to the board of Swimming Australia.

“I’m extremely proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to lead our sport at this time, and would like to thank the stakeholders for their support,” said Nettlefold.

“There are some great people involved in our sport from the volunteer level at every club in the country, to coaches and administrators, and of course the athletes.

“Swimming is a sport of huge national interest and has a proud history of success in and out of the water. We face some challenges at the moment, most evidently in performance, but with every challenge there is an opportunity to improve.”

“The review into our sport is already underway and I’m encouraging the stakeholders within our sport to embrace it.”

Triple Olympian Nicole Livingstone comes on the board with vast experience as an athlete at the high performance level, as well as being a media professional and sports broadcaster for the last 16 years, while Nunawading Swim Club CEO, Gary Barclay was re-elected for a further term.

Graeme Johnson is a former president of Kawana Waters Swim Club and the Northern Suburbs Swimming Association and has worked as a Chief Financial Officer across a broad spectrum of industries, diverse in size from small to Top 10 ASX companies.
