Community Swim Draws Bumper Crowd to Busselton

Swimming Australia’s inaugural Community Swim event has seen hundreds of amateur swimming enthusiasts converge on Busselton today in a wonderful celebration of the sport.

More than 400 participants enjoyed the crystal clear waters alongside the iconic Busselton Jetty, swimming the same course as the Australian Open Water Championships competitors.

Swimmers of all ages completed a variety of course distances including 500m, 1.25km, 2.5km, 5km, 7.5 km and the impressive 10km option.

The early action on Day 2 of the 2023 Ocean Swim Festival and Australian Open Water Championships saw competitors take to the water to contest the Girl’s and Boy’s 14-15 year old 5km Australian Titles.

Hayden Cahill (Yeronga Park) claimed the Boy’s 14 year old 5km Championship ahead of Lachlan Parker (Toowoomba Grammar) and Sterling Tuxford (Trinity Grammar), while in the Boy’s 15 year old 5km it was a Gold medal for Luke Higgs (Warringah), with Nicholas Macher (Revesby Workers) and Jed Rowlands (Pelican Waters) rounding out the podium.

Sophie Hebron (Albany Creek) won a sprint finish in the Girl’s 14 year old 5km Championship, touching out Amber-Skye Stevenson (Woy Woy) by a handful of seconds with Sienna Pitt (Southlake Dolphins) in third. Amelie Smith (Rocky City) was too strong for the field in the Girl’s 15 year old 5km event, claiming Gold ahead of Sophie Jacka (Melbourne) and Riley Smith (Redcliffe Leagues).
