World First Relay Set for Duel in the Pool

The return of Duel in the Pool this weekend in Sydney will be significant on a number of levels.

Not only will it mark the first time USA Swimming has competed on Australian soil since 2007, it will also be the first time para events have been included in a truly integrated version of the competition.

And now, the reinvigoration of swimming’s ultimate rivalry is also set to host a world first relay event on at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, with the inclusion of a mixed 4x50m multi-class/able-bodied freestyle relay as part of the program.

The unprecedented event will see two para and two able bodied athletes from each gender competing on the same relay team for the first time ever at a major swimming event with international representation.

With the para classification set at S9 for the event, it will likely see Australia’s most decorated Paralympian, Ellie Cole, take her place in this ground breaking relay in her very last appearance as an Australian Dolphin.

“I always dreamed that it would happen for quite some time. I used to train with the Campbell sisters, so I’m used to doing relay changes into able-bods,” Cole said.

“I think it perfectly showcases the relationship that our Paralympic team has with our Olympic swim team. We saw just how special that was at the Commonwealth Games.

“I think it’s going to be exciting for the crowds that are there. There are going to be so many young kids who are going to be at that event that are excited to see some of Australia’s swimming superstars. And it’s going to mean a lot to them to see people with disabilities being in the same race as able-bods.”
