Swimming Australia has confirmed that the majority of the 2022 Open Water Championships will go ahead, although there have been some changes to the scheduling due to the ongoing COVID situation.
With COVID cases on the rise across the country and on advice from our biosecurity team, the schedule will now take place over the Saturday and Sunday, reducing the time on the ground for staff, contractors and athletes. Biosecurity protocols will also be shared with relevant parties to provide the safest environment for the event to take place.
Saturday’s racing will feature the Men’s and Women’s Open 10km, the Boys and Girls 18 & 19 years 10km and the Boys and Girls 16 & 17 years 7.5km. Sunday’s schedule will feature the Men’s and Women’s Open and MultiClass 5km as well as the Boys and Girls 14 to 15 and 16 to 19 years 5km.
Unfortunately, the JX Exhibition and team relay events have been cancelled for the 2022 event.
Swimming Australia is committed to delivering the national events schedule however, as with everything in the current climate, changes and postponements may occur to ensure they are delivered in the safest possible way for all involved.
Greg Shaw, Open Water Performance Manager, said Swimming Australia still had a strong desire to deliver key events.
“The COVID situation has continued to impact everyone over the past two years and clearly this is still being felt across the country.
“We want to ensure we give our athletes, coaches and programs a chance to qualify for international open water events in 2022 in the safest way possible. We will keep assessing our qualification events over the coming months to try to find the best way to deliver them to set our athletes up for success.
“We also acknowledge that some people would have been looking forward to the events that have been cancelled and we know this isn’t an ideal situation. Hopefully we will be in a position to bring these events back in future years when the COVID situation settles.”
Refunds for nominations already received for the cancelled events will be processed over the next few days. The full schedule of events and updated information books can be found here.
