Whether it’s takeaway or dine in, it’s time to line up 1.5 metres apart and grab coffee with a mate. Your baristas on bar are Swimming Australia’s Performance Solutions Manager, Jess Corones and Lead Dietitian and Open Water Performance Manager, Greg Shaw.
After working closely for several years with some of the world’s top coaches, sports scientists, athletes and the Australian Dolphins Swim team, the pair began hosting virtual coffee catch ups with some of swimming’s elite during the initial stages of the COVID-19 lockdown earlier this year.
Featuring conversations with Australian Dolphins coaches, including Adam Kable, Craig Jackson, Simon Cusack, Michael Bohl and more, as well as members from Swimming Australia’s high-performance team.
“It was the brain-child of Greg and myself, we wanted to really demonstrate the work and effort that goes on behind the scenes from great people,” said Corones.
“We thought it was a great way to stay connected while people were out of the water and highlight the expertise and fantastic work that goes on around the country in our high performance programs.”
Providing insight, tips and reflections, the rotating guests and conversations provide awareness into how Australia’s high performance squads pivoted their training programs to suit those unable to get in the water and the ongoing struggles that COVID-19 presents.
With restrictions varying around the nation, some club swimmers are making the long-awaited return to the water, whilst others remain on dryland, the insights captured by Corones and Shaw transfer to the new normal. These practices remain relevant not only to elite swimmers but grassroots, recreational, and the wider swimming community who are unable to access pools or their club.
More recently expanding to include what the pair have named “The Final Lap”, an informative ‘get to know you’ piece with members of our swimming tribe, the series continues to remain innovative. Creating digestible, shorter content pieces as people start to get back to their normal lives.
Providing a vital connection point to the swimming community, previously not accessed Corones and Shaw welcome you all to join them for a coffee, chat and a lesson or two.
So why not catch up with Corones and Shaw and see their conversations from isolation?
