Dolphins strong on day five

There were plenty of Dolphins in the pool on day five of the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Hangzhou.

Debutant Abbey Harkin (St Peters Western) (2:07.45) swam a personal best time in the women’s 200m individual medley to finish third in her heat to qualify sixth fastest and will join Emily Seebohm (Brisbane Grammar) (2:07.78) in tonight’s final who qualified in eighth spot.

Making her first senior international final, Harkin said: “I had a race on day one and had a bit of a break, so to get back up this morning and do a massive PB I was really happy.

“It was a massive goal of mine to get to swim at these championships, but to also make the final I’m just so stoked,” she added.

Following her impressive silver in last nights’ 50m butterfly, Holly Barratt (Rockingham) (23.94) lined up for the women’s 50m freestyle finishing first in her heat and through to the semi-finals this evening.

The men’s 4x50m medley relay of Mitch Larkin (St Peters Western) (23.36), Grayson Bell (TSS Aquatic) (26.51), Cameron Jones (St Peters Western) (22.45) and Cam McEvoy (TSS Aquatic) placed fourth in the heat, heading into tonight’s final in seventh position.

David Schlicht (MLC) (4:08.41) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (Griffith University) (4:05.08) were in action in the heats of the men’s 400m individual medley with Fraser-Holmes qualifying third equal for tonight’s final and Schlicht finishing 11th.

In the heats of the men’s 100m freestyle, McEvoy was back in the pool along with Louis Townsend (Rackley), with McEvoy heading into tonight’s semi-final in 11th and Townsend finishing in 19th.

Bell swam a 26.75 in the men’s 50m breaststroke to finish in 23rd place.

The women’s 4x200m freestyle relay of Carla Buchanan (Acacia Bayside) (1:56.37), Minna Atherton (Brisbane Grammar) (1:55.08), Harkin (1:55.74) and Ariarne Titmus (Brisbane Grammar) (1:53.53) touched first in their heat in 7:40.72 and will swim out of lane four in the final this evening.
