Australia’s 2019 National 10km Open Water Champions, Nick Sloman and Kareen Lee, have claimed victories overseas, taking home gold medals in the Midmar Mile in South Africa.
Completing the course in 17:01, Noosa’s Sloman was just one second off the course record of 17:00 set by eight-time winner and local Chad Ho, while teammate Lee touched in a time of 18:20 to take out the women’s field.
As one of the world’s biggest open water swimming events, the race is held in Midmar Dam – north of Pietermaritzburg – and is divided in groups by age category, with elite swimmers typically participating in their respective men’s and women’s 14-30 age group.
The duo headed to South Africa last week to compete in the iconic event and will now meet up with their open water teammates in Qatar to take part in FINA’s 2019 Marathon Swim World Series.
The 10km Open event at Doha Corniche forms part of the qualification process for the FINA World Championships in Korea later this year – with the top ten in the men’s and women’s 10km event qualifying for Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
